Macron claims Trump wants ceasefire agreement at Putin summit
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has indicated to Western European leaders that he hopes to secure a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict during his upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
The announcement came after a video conference on Wednesday involving Trump, leaders from Germany, Finland, France, the UK, Italy, Poland, EU officials, and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky. The discussion focused on Trump’s Alaska meeting with Putin scheduled for Friday.
Macron told reporters that Trump intends to “obtain a ceasefire in Ukraine” at the summit and assured European leaders that any territorial negotiations would include Ukraine at the table. Trump also reportedly plans to propose a future trilateral meeting with Putin and Zelensky, potentially in Europe.
Earlier, Trump suggested that a peace deal might require some form of land swap, which Zelensky has rejected, citing Ukraine’s constitutional limitations on recognizing Russian sovereignty over claimed territories.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that Western European leaders and Trump agreed to increase “pressure” on Putin if no progress is made in Alaska.
Russia has expressed willingness to pursue a peaceful resolution but emphasized that any agreement must address the conflict’s root causes and reflect on-the-ground realities, including the status of former Ukrainian territories that joined Russia following referendums. Moscow has framed the summit as an opportunity to repair strained US-Russia relations and resolve longstanding issues, while Trump described it as a “feel-out meeting” to assess the possibility of ending the conflict.
