Poland’s PM calls on Europe to convince Trump of untrustworthiness of Russia
European leaders expressed cautious optimism following a virtual meeting with Trump, hosted by Germany, to discuss the Ukraine conflict. Tusk stated that the discussions focused on how Europe could positively influence Trump’s talks with Putin. He noted that the August 15 summit is unlikely to produce a complete solution but could serve as a preliminary step toward quick decisions on a ceasefire.
According to Tusk, Poland’s position serves as a model for other countries on negotiating Ukraine-related issues. He emphasized that Russia must not be allowed to dictate the borders of neighboring nations. Tusk also warned against attempts by Moscow to include NATO security arrangements in the talks or to reduce allied troop deployments, including in Poland.
Stressing the need for a fair resolution in Ukraine, he said no conditions should be imposed that would amount to Ukraine’s surrender. Trump reportedly told European leaders that his objective for the summit is to achieve a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv. He described the virtual meeting as “a ten” and cautioned that Russia would face “very severe” consequences if it failed to end its war in Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz added that the leaders had “made it clear that Ukraine must be at the table as soon as follow-up meetings take place.”
