Trump Proposes Talks with Zelensky
He suggested that the meeting would also include Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, and Trump expressed willingness to attend if invited.
In an address at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on Wednesday, ahead of his scheduled meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday, Trump told the press that he planned to use the upcoming talks to “find out where we are and what we’re doing.”
He added, “If the meeting goes okay, we’ll have a quick second one – I would like to do it almost immediately.”
Trump further mentioned that the follow-up meeting would aim to bring together Putin, Zelensky, and himself, “if they’d like to have me there.”
Moscow has consistently indicated its openness to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict but emphasized that any agreement must address the underlying causes of the dispute and reflect the current realities.
This includes the status of the Ukrainian territories that voted to join Russia following public referendums.
Meanwhile, Zelensky, who had earlier referred to the Alaska summit as a “personal victory” for Putin, arrived in Berlin on Wednesday. There, he joined German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for a video call with European leaders and Trump.
Moscow has long accused Zelensky of being in denial about the situation and of prolonging a conflict that, according to them, he cannot ultimately win.
