Kiev Expresses Openness to Discuss Territorial Issues
This statement came after a virtual meeting with US President Donald Trump and various European leaders.
The online conference, which included representatives from Germany, Finland, France, the UK, Italy, Poland, the EU, and Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky, centered on the upcoming summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Merz emphasized that Europe’s support for Ukraine remained focused on ensuring both Ukraine's and the EU’s security concerns were “safeguarded in Alaska.”
The chancellor explained that these points were conveyed to Trump during the meeting. A total of five "key points" were raised by the leaders, one of which expressed that Kiev is “willing to negotiate on territorial issues” with Moscow.
However, these negotiations would be based on the current line of contact as the starting point.
According to Merz, “legal recognition” of Russia’s newly annexed regions by Western nations is “not up for debate.”
In addition, the group put forward demands for a ceasefire as a precondition for any future “framework agreement” and called for "robust security guarantees" to be extended to Kiev.
During the press conference, Zelensky, who was also in Berlin, confirmed his agreement with all five points laid out by Merz.
However, shortly afterward, he clarified that his stance on territorial concessions to Russia remained unchanged.
