Moderate Quake Hits Pacific Island Nation of Tonga
The seismic event hit the Tonga Islands region at 5:38 p.m. local time (0438 GMT), GEOFON said in its latest update. Earlier, the research center had initially estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 6.0, but later revised it downward to 5.6.
The US Geological Survey also registered the quake at 5.6 magnitude, with the depth estimated to be between 10 and 25 kilometers (6 to 15 miles) beneath the earth's surface.
Authorities have not yet reported any damage to infrastructure or casualties resulting from the quake. Residents and officials remain on alert as monitoring continues, but so far, there are no indications of a tsunami threat following the tremor.
