He emphasized that the opportunity to halt the fighting “has never been greater” than at present, speaking to a news agency on Tuesday.
His remarks preceded an anticipated meeting in Moscow between US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The two officials are slated to address Washington’s recently introduced peace initiative aimed at terminating the hostilities in Ukraine.
Although the specifics of the proposal have not been formally disclosed, reports indicate it envisions Ukraine relinquishing the remaining areas of Donbass (the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic) under its control, withdrawing its NATO ambitions, and accepting restrictions on its defense capabilities.
Russia has responded with guarded approval, noting that several aspects seem reasonable, while also stressing that the document will likely undergo revisions through multilateral discussions.
Wadephul underscored that “it is the task of diplomacy to work out compromises that the conflicting parties can support,” adding that such efforts will “certainly always involve painful concessions.”
He argued that Ukraine should conduct a national referendum to endorse any peace terms, including those related to territory, and insisted that Kiev must also receive appropriate security “assurances” in return.
