Far-left group claims they are behind Berlin power outage

(MENAFN) A far-left group has claimed responsibility for a sabotage attack that left roughly 50,000 households without electricity in Berlin on Saturday, according to reports.

The Vulkangruppe reportedly sent a letter to police stating that it had set fire to cables linked to a power plant in the Lichterfelde district, describing the action as “an action in the public interest.”

The group said it had successfully targeted a natural gas power facility, framing the attack as a gesture of international solidarity against the fossil fuel industry.

In the letter, the group expressed regret for residents of lower-income neighborhoods affected by the outage, adding that its concern for wealthier areas was limited.

Authorities noted that the Vulkangruppe has been linked to multiple arson attacks in Berlin and Brandenburg since 2011. The group has also been tied to assaults on electrical infrastructure at a Tesla factory in 2021 and 2024. Berlin’s Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the organization as anarchist.

The fire damaged electricity cables, cutting power to approximately 50,000 homes and 2,000 commercial businesses, leaving more than 100,000 people affected. Officials have warned that the outage could continue until January 8.
